Configurable FMR/FNMR thresholds at each stage. Multimodal fusion (face + finger) increases deduplication confidence beyond any single modality.

System Components

An ABIS is built from tightly integrated subsystems — each critical to accurate, auditable, and scalable operation.

Biometric Capture

Fingerprint scanners and face cameras with integrated quality feedback. ICAO and FBI Appendix F compliant image acquisition.

Enrollment Software

Operator workstation for guided capture, quality assessment, and template extraction. Integrates document scanning and liveness detection for KYC workflows.

Biometric Database

Secure, scalable template store with encrypted-at-rest biometric records. Designed for millions to hundreds of millions of subjects with sub-second search latency.

Matching Engine

GPU-accelerated 1:N identification returning ranked candidate lists with match scores. Configurable thresholds for FMR/FNMR tradeoffs per use case.

Adjudication Workstation

Operator interface for reviewing candidate hits, side-by-side comparison, and making final match/no-match determinations with full audit trail.

Reporting & Analytics

Dashboards for throughput, match score distributions, operator performance, and SLA compliance. Exportable for audit and regulatory reporting.

Security & Privacy

End-to-end encryption, role-based access control, and privacy-by-design architecture. On-premise deployments available for air-gapped environments.

System Middleware

Integration layer exposing REST and SOAP APIs for seamless connection to civil registry, border management, and law enforcement back-office systems.

Deduplication at Scale

The deduplication engine runs 1:N matching across millions of enrolled subjects to eliminate duplicate identities before enrollment is confirmed.

Deduplication Process

1:N Search

New biometric probe is compared against all enrolled templates. Match scores are computed and ranked.

Threshold Filter

Candidates above the configurable FMR threshold are flagged as potential duplicates for review.

Adjudication

Operator reviews top candidates side-by-side. Final determination: match (duplicate) or no-match (new identity).

Enrollment or Rejection

Confirmed new identities are enrolled with a unique ID. Confirmed duplicates are flagged and logged for review.

Partner

id3 × SELP — the full national identity stack

National ABIS projects don't stop at biometric matching. They span enrolment stations, secure-document personalisation, civil registries and post-issuance verification. For these end-to-end programs, id3 partners with SELP — a French specialist of secure identity documents and digital government solutions, present in 60+ countries. Together we deliver complete identity programs where id3's biometric engine sits inside SELP's enrolment-to-issuance infrastructure.

id3 Technologies
  • Multimodal biometric algorithms (face, fingerprint)
  • NIST FRTE — top performer for accuracy / speed / template size
  • Embedded SDKs and ABIS matching engine — 1:1 and 1:N at scale
  • Liveness detection & document authentication
  • Secure documents — national ID, driver licences, voter cards, eDatapage passports
  • Enrolment infrastructure (desktop / mobile tablets)
  • Card personalisation — 100+ million cards/year, high-security sites
  • Credential Management System (CMS) and eGovernment platforms
Combined output: turnkey national identity programs — from citizen enrolment and biometric deduplication to ID card production, delivery and ongoing verification across border posts, civil registries and public services.

Application Domains

ABIS technology powers identity infrastructure for governments, law enforcement, healthcare, and financial services worldwide.

Border Control

Automated e-gate verification and watchlist screening against national and international biometric databases at ports of entry.

Civil Registry

National ID and voter registration deduplication for populations of millions — ensuring one citizen, one identity, one record.

Law Enforcement

AFIS and FRIS systems for criminal investigation — latent fingerprint matching, suspect identification, and gang/watchlist cross-checking.

Healthcare

Patient deduplication prevents medical errors from duplicate records. Biometric login secures access to electronic health records.

Financial Services

KYC deduplication, fraud prevention, and biometric authentication for account opening, credit, and high-value transaction approval.

Social Benefits

Welfare and humanitarian aid distribution with biometric verification — preventing ghost beneficiaries and duplicate registrations.

Why id3 Technologies

Proven at Scale

id3 algorithms power ABIS systems serving populations from hundreds of thousands to tens of millions — with documented deduplication accuracy in government-certified deployments.

Multimodal Fusion

Combine face and fingerprint in a single ABIS instance. Fusion at score or decision level multiplies deduplication confidence well beyond single-modality limits.

Data Sovereignty

Fully on-premise and air-gapped deployments supported. No cloud dependency — biometric data stays within national borders and client-controlled infrastructure.

35+ Years in Biometrics

Founded in 1990, id3 has shipped biometric technology to governments, banks, and system integrators in 20+ countries. Deep domain expertise, not a startup pivot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Key questions about ABIS architecture, deduplication, and id3's technology.

01 What is an ABIS and how does it differ from a simple biometric system?

A simple biometric system performs 1:1 verification — confirming that a captured sample matches a known identity. An ABIS performs 1:N identification and deduplication at scale: it searches an entire database to find who a person is, and ensures no duplicate identity exists in the registry. ABIS deployments typically handle millions of subjects, require adjudication workflows, and integrate with civil or government back-office systems.

02 What biometric modalities does id3's ABIS support?

id3 Technologies provides algorithms for face recognition (NIST FRTE evaluated) and fingerprint identification (NIST MINEX III evaluated). These modalities can be used independently or fused together in a multimodal ABIS for higher deduplication confidence.

03 How large a database can the ABIS matching engine handle?

The matching engine scales horizontally across GPU clusters. Face recognition achieves 1 million comparisons in 45 ms on a single GPU. Fingerprint 1:N search returns results in under 1 second for typical AFIS-scale databases. For very large populations (50M+), the system partitions the search space and merges candidate lists in parallel.

04 What happens when the automated search flags a potential duplicate?

When the match score of a candidate exceeds the configured threshold, the case is routed to an adjudication workstation. A trained operator reviews the probe and candidate side-by-side — comparing biometric samples, metadata, and contextual information — before making a final match/no-match determination. All decisions are logged for audit.

05 Can the ABIS be deployed on-premise or in an air-gapped environment?

Yes. id3's matching algorithms and SDKs are licensed for on-premise deployment with no cloud dependency or phone-home requirement. Air-gapped operation is fully supported — the system runs entirely within the client's own data center or government network perimeter.

06 How does id3 help system integrators build an ABIS?

id3 provides the core biometric SDKs (Face SDK, Finger SDK) and REST APIs that system integrators embed into their ABIS platforms. We supply the algorithm layer — extraction, matching, quality assessment — while integrators build the workflow, adjudication UI, and back-office connectivity on top. id3's APIs follow open standards (ISO, NIST) for interoperability.
